Engineering for
a better world.
Welcome to EWH Tulane
Hospitals in many parts of the world lack basic medical equipment and technology. As a result,
doctors and nurses are unable to provide adequate healthcare to patients in impoverished areas.
Engineering World Health (EWH) is an international organization of
volunteers dedicated to improving conditions in these hospitals. The engineers, doctors, and students of
EWH work to provide effective and reliable medical equipment for the medical staffs abroad. There are EWH
chapters at many engineering schools throughout the United States. The chapters repair medical equipment
from U.S. hospitals and build medical devices that have been designed with the developing world in mind.
Each year about 50 volunteers participate in the EWH Summer Institute where they travel to hospitals in Africa
and Central America to install the equipment. EWH maintains close relationships with the host hospitals to
respond to their needs and assess their progress towards stability.
EWH Tulane is a group of Tulane students and faculty for advancing the goals of
Engineering World Health. We welcome the opportunity to work with anyone in the Greater New Orleans
community who shares our common vision of an acceptable standard of healthcare for all citizens of the
world. EWH Tulane will seek donations of medical equipment from New Orleans area hospitals. We will
repair damaged equipment and design new medical devices for the benefit of people in disadvantaged
countries. Participation in EWH Tulane will improve technical skills pertaining to biomedical devices,
increase awareness about the state of healthcare in the developing world, and serve as excellent
preparation for participation in the EWH Summer Institute or any other EWH volunteer position.

A founding member of EWH-Tulane, Justin Cooper, has returned from a medical mission trip to St. Joseph Hospital in La Vallee de Jacmel, Haiti. He traveled with the Louisiana-based group,
AHDH, and met many wonderful people and experienced the beautiful country of Haiti for the first time. On the two-week trip, Justin helped install and repair suction machines, electrosurgery machines, fetal monitors, vital signs monitors, and other medical equipment at the hospital. He also took inventory of equipment at the hospital and made note of replacement parts that should be brought to the hospital on subsequent visits to get more machines up and running. EWH-Tulane looks forward continued work with AHDH in the future.
